Art
This is a comprehensive foundation course that
is suitable for all students with varying abilities who are interested
in hands-on creative experiences. Students will have the opportunity
to explore not only a variety of 2-dimensional materials but
will also experiment with a variety of 3-dimensional materials.
Examples are kiln fired clay, wire, wood, paper mache and plaster.
With a focus on Elements of Art and the Principles of Design
in accordance with the New York State Visual Art Standards, this
full year course will satisfy a broad spectrum of student interest.*

Drawing/Painting
Studio
The concentration in this course is to develop
individual expression, personal style and artistic vision through
drawing and painting in traditional and non-traditional ways.
Students will have an opportunity to work at an easel in a studio
setting, create in plein air and engage in printmaking with a
professional press. The use of a variety of drawing and painting
materials will be explored for themes such as life drawing, landscape
and still life.

Ceramics/Sculpture Studio
The concentration in this course is creative
expression in the art elements and principles of design through
3-dimensional design. The student will learn many techniques
in clay building and kiln firing. Students will also have the
opportunity to work with a variety of sculpture materials that
may include stone, wire, plaster, wood and metal, as well as
found objects. This course is the foundation for the Advanced
Placement Art 3-D Portfolio.

Advanced
Art Studio
This course will advance the individual student's
skills with an emphasis on developing conceptual threads, composition
and execution of ideas. Students will demonstrate technique,
ideation and problem-solving through a multitude of media which
may include a variety of paints, drawing and printmaking materials,
ceramics and sculpture, and digital/computer images. Although
a focus will be to complete work for the Breadth section of the
Advanced Placement 2-D portfolio, the class is not limited to
only students interested in achieving this goal.

AP
Art Studio - Drawing
This
course will prepare students for an AP Drawing portfolio that
meets the requirements for AP college
credit. The portfolio consists of a body of 24 works, 12 of which
are a concentration and 12 of which are a breadth which demonstrate
of the student's understanding of drawing issues. Students should
attend a museum exhibit each semester outside of class and should
take at least one session of Life Drawing at any local art school
or university. Students considering this course must fulfill
prerequisites as listed below.

AP
Art Studio - 2-D Design
This
course will prepare students for an AP 2D Design portfolio
that meets the requirements for AP college
credit. The portfolio consists of a body of 24 works, 12 of which
are a breadth section which will demonstrate the student's understanding
of the Principles of Design. The concentration section of 12
works describes an in-depth exploration of a particular design
concern. This design area may be illustrated by, but not limited
to, graphic design, digital imaging, collage, fabric design,
weaving, illustration, painting, printmaking or animation.

Media
Arts
Media Arts is a foundation level course that incorporates
the New York State Standards for art education. This course will
give each student an opportunity to explore the elements and principles
of design through the use of electronic media. Students will utilize
graphic programs, scanners, digital cameras and experiment with
a wide variety of art materials. Within the Media Arts curriculum,
students will develop aesthetic sensitivity, practical experiences,
technical terminology and a multicultural and historical perspective
on the Media Arts. Units in art history, computer graphics, film
history, animation and photography will be explored throughout
the year. Students successfully completing this course for one
unit of credit satisfy the Art graduation requirement.

Advanced
Media Arts II This course will build upon computer techniques acquired in
the foundation level Media Arts I. Through a series of advanced
level Photoshop assignments, students will begin to create digital
works of art for the Breadth section of the AP Media Portfolio.
Students will work with a variety of mixed media materials including
computers, digital cameras and other electronic equipment. Students
will be encouraged to experiment with various techniques combining
traditional and non traditional materials.

Advertising
Design I & II
This
course will introduce the development of advertising, its function
and processes of ads for publication. Students will practice
lettering styles, illustrations, color visuals and be taught
practical experiences working in an ad agency. Lessons will
include logo designs, business brochures, business cards and
the use of computer technology to produce examples of student
creations.

Computer
Art I - NOT OFFERED 2009 - 2010
This
advanced level media class will encourage an in depth understanding
of the role of computer technology as an art medium. Each semester
students will produce an independent digital portfolio of artwork
utilizing Photoshop 7.0, Flash MX, Dreamweaver, VR Worx and Pixela
digital video editing software programs. This course will provide
hands on training with digital camera, scanners, digital video
cameras and other forms of electronic media.

Computer Art II -

Students
taking this course will further explore the many design applications
of the PC computer and advanced level graphic software programs.
Semester projects will include: Color digital photography,
Flash
animated movies, Digital video films, Dreamweaver Web site design,
VR Worx interactive photographic panoramas, CD cover design,
poster
designs and other related art projects. Students will create
a digital CD Rom portfolio of completed assignments and produce
poster size computer prints.

Animation
I - NOT OFFERED 2009 -
2010
This
course teaches the basics of traditional animation production
methods. Students will learn the origins and histories of the
medium, as well as experience, firsthand, a wide array of technical
approaches. Topics will include timing and spacing methods, overlapping
and secondary actions, production design and other "principles
of animation." Guest speakers from local studios will highlight
the different phases of production covered in class. Students
will complete assignments, designed to further comprehension of
concepts covered in class. Finished assignments will be kept on
computer CDs and brought home after the semester's end.

Animation
II - NOT OFFERED 2009
- 2010
Taking
off where Animation I leaves off, this course delves much more
deeply into character development, staging methods, layout our
camera moves within a 2-dimensional field, and other more advanced
concerns to the experienced animator. Students will work on short
"action analysis" projects in class, as well as create
their own original short films, which they can bring home at the
end of the semester on computer CDs.

Advanced
Computer Animation - NOT
OFFERED 2009 - 2010
This
class is an Introduction to the principles of motion graphics
using Adobe After Effects, the industry standard in two-dimensional
computer animation software. Similar to Adobe PhotoShop, you will
be capable of altering digital media with the use of filters,
effects, and composition practices. You will learn design for
motion graphics projects from concept through production to final
delivery as a compressed movie. Students will incorporate digital
(both video and still) camera work into their projects. You will
also learn the specifics of creating After Effects projects -
basics of key frame animation, building multi-layered compositions,
designing with effects, transparency, motion typography, audio
and rendering compressed movie files.
This
class will prepare students who are interested in working
inthe
vast field of computer arts, including Web designer, compositor
for film/video/television, special effects, and character
animator.

Photography
I
A beginning course of photography which is highlighted by instruction
in the use of a 35 mm. camera and the development and printing
of photographs you have taken. The class will also include a variety
of photo printing techniques and field trips to interesting photo
opportunity sites on Long Island or in New York City.
Each
student will participate in activities which are centered around
the computer and Photoshop software.

Photography
II
This course will provide the student with further exploration
of new and advanced techniques in enlarging (double exposure photographs),
color printing, and coloring black & white photos. They will
experiment with toning, watercolors, pen & ink, along with
special mounting techniques.
The
student will also be introduced to the digital camera and its
unique capabilities with the computer and the software package
Photoshop. This course will enable the student to broaden his/her
art portfolio.

Photography
III - Digital
This
course would
be a follow-up to the basic photography courses. Students will
work in digital format only, learning the ins and outs of a
digital camera and the image enhancement with Photoshop. This
course is a must for students interested in taking AP Photo.
The course will include several photo assignments that may
be used for their AP Portfolio. Students will also be able
to print large digital images suitable for framing.

IV
This
course develops the serious art or photography student into
a strong specialist with an excellent background for college
or the photography industry. The student will learn special
Photoshop skills to customize their art work and college portfolio.

and any slides or CD's that they may need to make for college.

Design
and Drawing I & II -

Design
and Drawing for Production encourages visual problem solving using
a common graphic language to describe forms in the man-made environment.
To enable the student to analyze, creatively design and critically
evaluate these forms, the course requires researching for historical
precedents, cultural references, environmental impact and future
vision.
The
Design/Production Process section provides the student with steps
a project goes through in industry, beginning with a need and
ending with production. The teacher parallels the experiences
of a Design Activity Brief to this real life process in order
for the student to understand and relate the exercises.

Design
and Drawing III -
NOT OFFERED 2009 - 2010
Design
and Drawing has been developed as a sequential response to
design and drawing for production (DDP). The course outline
is intended to be implemented through a full year advanced
study of the Universal Graphic Language, through which each
student can express his or her ideas with creativity, clarity,
and exactness. Design and Drawing III will focus on environmental,
project, and transportation design. In addition, the course
outline will address a wide range of design activity briefs
(DABs), research projects, and basic model construction.

Architectural Design V -

The
students explore the field of commercial architecture with
emphasis on site and plot planning, wall constructions, foundation
walls, and skeleton framing. The students redesign floor plans
and elevations of commercial and industrial building according
to local building codes.

Making
Collages and Books -
NOT OFFERED 2009 - 2010
This high school course will explore ways in which to invent
your own collage style using paint, fabric, rubber stamps, found
objects and memorabilia, as well as uncovering new ideas for
creating personal pages and fresh ways to use a wide array of
art supplies and crafting materials.
Students will be introduced to contemporary collage and bookmaking
artists and will learn to utilize their tips and techniques in
order to create unique, expressive and vivid pieces of art.
