9th
Grade Introduction to Research Seminar Course
This seminar course provides introductory information about: the
nature of research; the scope and methods of science research,
the scope and methods of social science research, and the scope
and methods of mathematics research; the structure of the Jericho
High School Research Program; expectations of students who join
the program. The goal of this course is to allow students to effectively
choose one of the three fields of research to pursue in the tenth
grade and beyond, and to develop, in the students, appropriate
expectations of the level of commitment necessary for full participation
in a research program.

Grade Beginning Research Course in Science
10th Grade Beginning Research Course in Social Science
The student will opt for a Beginning Research Course in the sciences,
or social sciences. The instructional component of the course
will focus on the research methods and practices including, but
not limited to such topics as: literature searches, bibliography
development, choosing a research question, developing hypotheses,
research paradigms, data collection, data analysis, communication
of results, written abstracts, experimentation, scientific projects,
presentations, and “hands-on” research completed
in house, at university, hospital, government lab ECT. The hands-on
component of the course will involve the development of projects
suitable for entry into a variety of competitions. This course
is a prerequisite for remaining in the Research Program. Students
shall also enter non-data driven competitions, fairs, or projects
including but not limited to, the DUPONT Challenge, Toshiba ExploraVision,
Young Naturalist Competition, Team America Rocketry Challenge
and the National Science Bowl.

Grade Intermediate Research Course in Science
11th Grade Intermediate Research Course in Social Science
The
instructional component of the eleventh grade course would focus
on: advanced research design, advanced data analysis and statistics,
and research ethics. The hands-on component will be geared toward
the design and execution of a project idea for investigation
by
the student, and hopefully lead to an "Intel level" research
project. As appropriate, time will also be spent in the establishment
of connections between students and professional
mentors who will assist in the guidance of students as they perform
their research. Eleventh grade students will be required to
enter their research projects in a minimum of four research fairs
and contests. The Intermediate Research Course, university level
research during the summer between 11th and 12th grades, are
prerequisites for continuing in the Research Program.

Students
will complete their research projects and then write their
research
paper and prepare presentation materials. They will enter the
senior level contests appropriate to their area of study, such
as the Siemens Competition, the Intel
Science Talent Search, SUNY Stony Brook's Junior Science and
Humanities Symposium, Long Island Science and Engineering Fair,
Long Island Science Congress, Manhattanville College Science Competition/Fair,
The Rohm and Haas Invitational, New York State Science and
Engineering Fair, and the International Sustainable World-Energy,

Senior
Experience
The “Senior Experience” is
an interdisciplinary program for 12th graders, combining English,
Participation in
Government, and Economics, with outside internships. Its goal
is to probe the relationship between an individual and the society
in which he/she lives. The students are researching and actively
participating in diverse fields of study based on their unique
interests. Internships are being sought in the following fields:
photography, sports, sports medicine, business, advertising,
journalism, education, broadcasting, health care, computer art/graphic
design and magazine publication. A requirement for completion
of the course is a 10 minute interactive presentation that encapsulates
all 3 components of the program (English, Social Studies and
Internship).
