Roxanne Day 2 Period 6

This year in health was really an experience. It being a genuinely good and relaxing course, it was definitely an alleviation of the stress in the day. It also taught me a lot more than I knew, and warned me about the dangers of messing around with your body using unknown substances or even known substances, such as alcohol. It also showed me the possible catastrophes and effects of taking drugs, or even smoking tobacco, such as having tar in your lungs.

Yet, there were three projects or assignments that really impacted me. For one of them, we learned about the effects of drinking visually, which turned out to be surprisingly dangerous no matter how self assured we felt. We wore goggles which twisted our vision according to possible BAC levels.

For the ‘Falling Stars,’ project, we were taught that even the best could fall. Researching the tantamount effects of drugs and its addiction on a celebrity, we learned how it contributed to the person’s imminent fall or death from fame. For example, I chose Andy Gibb, a music wonder at his time who fell by using cocaine. It made me more aware and cautious about the use of drugs.

As for the movie, Thank You for Smoking, I realized how tobacco companies kept business up by being well versed in debate. They were extremely well prepared in fighting their right to continue producing cigarettes and how it was the person’s choice to smoke. I saw how they were able to cleverly promote their company by manipulating the media and viewer’s sympathy. I thought it was extraordinarily interesting and well worth watching. It finally showed me how the tobacco companies could still exist after all slandering against them—that, and the addiction of tobacco as well.

This year, I loved the class. I think it was well worth my time and a great course to have. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun.
